Jun 2 Memory Cafe
Who should attend?
Memory Cafés are designed for people with memory loss, mild cognitive
impairment, early Alzheimer’s or other dementias. The Memory Café is open to
anyone without a formal referral or assessment. Those with dementia or
memory issues may attend unaccompanied when appropriate, or
with family, friends or care partners. This group is not suitable for people with
dementia to attend alone if they have specific care needs such as problems with
incontinence, mobility issues that require aid, high levels of anxiety, disorientation
or history of wandering.
What is a Memory Café?
A Memory Café is a place where individuals with memory loss
and their care partners can get together in a safe, supportive
and engaging environment. It is a time and place where people can interact, laugh,
find support, share concerns and celebrate without feeling embarrassed and misunderstood. The
Memory Café encourages friendship and acceptance. Participants share conversation in a
relaxed atmosphere that can include music, art or other forms of activity.
Do I need to pre-register?
You do not need to pre-register for the Memory Café but it would be helpful for
us to have a general idea of how many attendees to expect so we can plan
accordingly for refreshments. If you want to give us a heads up that you're
coming, please call the Stoughton Senior Center at 608-873-8585. But, if you want
to just drop in, that's fine too. We are looking forward to meeting you!
What does it cost?

Jun 11 Glory Days in the Rearview - Author Event
Join us to listen to author Mark Nepper speak about his book, Glory Days in the Rearview. After the talk there will be an opportunity to buy a copy of the book for $19 cash or card.
About the Book
We all remember that person from high school. You know, the person who seemed to glide through every aspect of those years. They were popular and successful but more significantly likeable. Everyone expected they would do the same after high school. Life, though, has a way of interfering with our plans and expectations. Those circumstances take Robb Cesario from the heights of high school glory to midlife, desperately struggling to maintain family connections amid tragedy and sadness, Robb returns to his roots. He tries to find his way back to the life he and everyone else imagined for him.
About the Author
Mark Nepper is a former award-winning newspaper reporter and state and nationally honored high school English teacher. He spent much of his life helping students find ways to tell their stories. He continues mentoring writing teachers in his role as co-director of the Greater Madison Writing Project. He also created and directs Writing Your Life workshops with senior citizens to help them tell their stories. He decided he should start telling his own stories and has written his debut novel, Glory Days in the Review: A Story of Love, Redemption and Hope. He is an avid bicyclist and wood carver and is exploring the joys and frustrations of water color painting. Mark lives in Madison, Wis. |

Jun 17 Banished Citizens
Historian Marla A. Ramírez will deliver a talk based on her recent book, Banished Citizens: A History of the Mexican American Women Who Endured Repatriation (Harvard University Press, October 2025). A limited number of free copies will be available for to give away!
From 1921 to 1944, approximately one million ethnic Mexicans living in the United States were removed across the border to Mexico. What officials called “repatriation” was in fact banishment: 60 percent of those expelled were US citizens, mainly working-class women and children whose husbands and fathers were Mexican immigrants.
Ramírez argues that banishment served interests on both sides of the border. In the United States, the government accused ethnic Mexicans of dependence on social services in order to justify removal, thereby scapegoating them for post–World War I and Depression-era economic woes. In Mexico, meanwhile, officials welcomed returnees for their potential to bolster the labor force. In the process, all Mexicans in the United States—citizens and undocumented immigrants alike—were cast as financially burdensome and culturally foreign.
Shedding particular light on the experiences of banished women, Ramírez depicts the courage and resilience of their efforts to reclaim US citizenship and return home. Nevertheless, banishment often interrupted their ability to pass on US citizenship to their children, robbed their families of generational wealth, and drastically slowed upward mobility.
Today, their descendants continue to confront and resist the impact of these injustices—and are breaking the silence to ensure that this history is not forgotten.
About the Presenter
Marla A. Ramírez is a historian of the US–Mexico borderlands with specialization in Mexican American banishment, Mexican repatriation, oral history, and gendered migrations. She is an Assistant Professor of History and Chicanx/e & Latinx/e Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Professor Ramírez completed her Ph.D. at the University of California, Santa Barbara in Chicana and Chicano Studies with a concentration in US history and a doctoral emphasis on feminist studies.
Her research has been supported by the Mellon Foundation, Ford Foundation, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research & Graduate Education at UW-Madison, and the Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment Grant. Her teaching and research interests include Mexican American banishment (generally referred to as “repatriation”), racialized citizenship, gendered migrations across the US–Mexico border, mass immigration removals, the making of illegality, historical methods, and the history of Latinx/es in the United States.

Who should attend?
Memory Cafés are designed for people with memory loss, mild cognitive
impairment, early Alzheimer’s or other dementias. The Memory Café is open to
anyone without a formal referral or assessment. Those with dementia or
memory issues may attend unaccompanied when appropriate, or

incontinence, mobility issues that require aid, high levels of anxiety, disorientation
or history of wandering.
What is a Memory Café?

Sep 2 Memory Cafe
If you want to give us a heads up that you're

to just drop in, that's fine too. We are looking forward to meeting you!

Aug 3 Memory Cafe
